However, if the symbolism of The Shadow of the Torturer is a Private Language then The Claw of the Conciliator sees that language gain meaning through use and the acquisition of context. I am relieved to say that it was better than I had feared. This edition contains the first two volumes of this four volume novel, The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator. This famous 1980 novel by Gene Wolf, the first of a four-part series, is paired with part two, The Claw of the Conciliator , to form Shadow & Claw .
